Science Firsthand is in need of Science Managers to provide hands-on science investigations at out of school time programs. This is a full-time position for 40 hours per week, through AmeriCorps ABLE. The Science Manager will be responsible for coordinating the project at a community center in the city of Buffalo that is a Science Firsthand host. This will include, but not be limited to, managing the center’s science lab, facilitating explorations both in the lab and at other locations, and supporting the activities of Science Firsthand’s adult volunteers and mentors. The Science Manager will work with youth (9–14 yrs) as well as the staff and volunteers at the particular community center.
Science Firsthand connects youth (9 - 14 yrs) with adult mentors to explore the natural urban landscape in their neighborhoods, and do hands on investigations. Mentor/mentee teams have planted gardens, dismantled simple appliances and built others, flown kites and much more. The Mentors meet one - to - one or with a small team of mentors and students, during the after school hours, evenings or Saturdays at a community center that is a Science Firsthand host. • Communicates with youth as equals
• Can make a year long commitment
• Is available to work from noon to 8 p.m. during the school year (Please include your own schedule here)
• Some experience with youth activities and management
• Enjoys learning new things through personal experience (this is the kind of learning that we are fostering in the youth and in their adult partners)
• Understands the needs of adolescents and the importance of caring adults in their lives
• Listens well
• Willing to improve his/her knowledge and skills base in natural history, physical science and technology through independent study
• Enjoys problem-solving in the work environment (flux is a constant element in the out-of-school environment)
• Able to provide own transportation to the Center/Clubhouses throughout the year and able to purchase supplies and to shuttle supplies from the Inquiry Center at Main and Jewett Sts. to the center.
• Conversant with word processing and email applications on PC or Mac operating systems
• Responds promptly to phone and email messages from center staff, parents and colleagues

0. Compensation: Full time members receive a yearly stipend of $11,400 (paid bi-weekly in the amount of approximately $438.46), health insurance and child care, and the education award is currently $4,725.00.
