Exploring Pioneer Park in Anaheim, California

Oh, look out! What’s that in the crack? We walk over cracks in the ground all the time, overlooking what are mini habitats or expressways for many insects and plants. Now stop and think about how many cracks, how many wonderful explorations, you have missed.

Here’s my experience from Pioneer Park in Anaheim, California:

There is a small picnic area with a trashcan and table with two benches on a cement platform. The platform is surrounded with grass. In one of the corners, a crack has formed. It has a jagged-edged, cone-shaped crack in the center (69 in), grass along the upper edge (40 in), and grass on the right side (46 in). I observed several ants crawling along the perimeter of the entire crack. There is heavier traffic in the grass areas, including a beetle. There are some twigs, leaves, sunflowers, dust, and dirt also found in this location.

There was one more surprise to find: a new hairline crack forming (12 in). This crack will eventually make a little triangle within the cone. It would be interesting to see this crack next year. So I ask the questions: What caused the crack? How fast does the crack change?

Try it yourself, pick a crack and do a study. You will be amazed at what you find. So don’t just pass by that crack - take a look and you might be surprised.
