If you will be attending the conference, consider showing up a day early
in the Big Easy and pre-register for our PDI – The Outdoor
Classroom: A Path to Science and Inquiry. Wednesday’s day-long
seminar will be held at the Audubon Zoo and offer firsthand experiences
that integrate key literacy skills with inquiry-based science. Learn more

There are plenty of opportunities to investigate outdoor learning, inquiry,
and scientific literacy once the conference officially commences on Thursday,
March 19th. Attend one or more of First Hand Learning’s
PDI Pathway Sessions. These will all be held in Room
338 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
Below is a day-by-day schedule of FHL’s pathway events. (You can

Thursday, March 19
8:00am–10:00am Archaeology Indoors and Out
Presenters: Peter Dow, Bill Rogers – First Hand Learning, Inc.
Intended Audience: Middle Level
Evidence changes when one moves from simulated archaeology indoors to
shovel and screen procedures outdoors. A community center in Buffalo tried
both approaches.
11:00am–1:00pm Outdoors During and After School
Presenters: Allan Hayes - The Nichols School, Bill Rogers - First
Hand Learning, Inc.
Intended Audience: Elementary; Middle Level
A fifth grade class starts mapping campus trees and finds there's no limit
to outdoor inquiries. Science Firsthand - Partners in Discovery
is a project that gives urban youth an adult mentor and time after school
for exploring scientifically.
2:00pm–3:00pm Strategies for Using Writing to Engage
High School Students in Science
Presenters: Diane Miller, Cynthia Graville – St. Louis Science
Center
Intended Audience: Elementary; Middle Level; Informal Education
Examine multiple writing strategies that build interest and understanding
in science content among high school students. Participants will review
student blogs, Instructables, tags, journals, webpage designs, posters,
and newspaper articles.
4:00pm–5:30pm Mapping the Schoolyard
Presenters: Patricia McGlashan, Kristen Gasser - First Hand Learning,
Inc.
Intended Audience: Elementary; Middle Level; High School; Informal Education
Learn how to evaluate the educational potential of a site by mapping its
resources, both natural and human made and by making cross-curricular
links to math, measurement, scaling, and drawing explicit.
Friday, March 20
8:00am–9:00am Afterschool Science for Kids
Presenter: Dianne Johnson – Buffalo Public Schools
Intended Audience: Elementary; Middle Level; Informal Education; General
A citywide collaboration to support teens in leading younger students
in after-school science experiences connected to their school science
curriculum. A collaboration between an urban Boys & Girls Club, school
district, and nonprofit organization.
9:30am–11:30am Nature Journals and Field Guides: Tools
for Linking Science and Literacy
Presenter: Mark Baldwin – Roger Tory Peterson Institute
Intended Audience: Elementary; Middle Level; Informal Education
Learn how to link nature journals as tools to propel inquiry with making
field guides as tools to promote literacy.
12:30pm–1:30pm Consider the Evidence—Using Student
Journals to Drive Instruction
Presenter: Therese Arsenault – Lansing Public Schools
Intended Audience: Elementary; Middle Level
Daily journal assessment in middle school science classes provides direction
for science instruction. We’ll analyze student journal entries,
noticing what students know about science process skills and content.
We’ll discuss strategies for using journals to drive instruction.
